Backup Generators and UPS: What Each One Actually Covers
A UPS and a generator solve two different problems, and the gap between them is where most standby power plans fall apart.

Standby power gets talked about like it's one thing. It isn't. A UPS and a backup generator cover two different problems, on two different timelines, and a building's protection is only as good as the handoff between them. We install and service both, and the question we get asked most often is some version of what actually happens the moment the utility drops. Here is the honest answer.
A UPS covers the gap, not the outage
A UPS system exists to bridge the instant between the utility failing and something else taking over, whether that something else is a generator coming online or simply riding out a blip that never turns into a real outage. It is built for seconds to minutes, not hours. Its job is to keep sensitive loads, controls, servers, and process equipment from seeing any interruption at all, because for that kind of equipment, even a fraction of a second of dropped power can mean a corrupted process, a faulted drive, or a system that has to be manually restarted. A UPS is not sized to carry a building through an afternoon without utility power. That is not what it is for.
Backup generators: from pad to transfer switch
A generator is the piece that actually carries a building through an extended outage, and getting there right starts with sizing it off the real load, not a rough guess based on square footage. We look at what the building actually needs to keep running: life safety systems, refrigeration, process equipment, essential lighting, and anything else that genuinely can't wait. From there it's pad placement, fuel supply, the automatic transfer switch that senses the outage and moves the load, and an exercise schedule so the unit is proven to start when it's actually needed rather than the first time it's called on for real.
The handoff is where standby power actually fails
Here is the part that gets skipped in a lot of installations. The transfer switch has to know what rides through the transition without interruption and what is allowed to reboot. Some equipment tolerates a brief break in power just fine. Some does not, and that's exactly the equipment a UPS should be sitting in front of. Get the sequencing wrong and you can end up with a generator that starts perfectly and a transfer switch that still drops a load it should have protected, because nobody worked out which system was supposed to cover that gap in the first place. This is coordination work, not a checklist you fill in after the equipment is bolted down.
Commissioning and the record you keep
A generator installation isn't finished when it starts. We run a load bank test to confirm the unit performs under the load it's actually going to carry, not just at idle, and we document the results. That written record becomes the baseline for the maintenance schedule the building keeps afterward. A generator that has never been tested under load is an assumption, not a plan.
U.P.S. systems belong to the same conversation as the generator
We install U.P.S. systems as part of the same standby power scope as backup generators, because sizing one without the other leaves a real gap in coverage. A UPS sized only for what's in the building today, with no room for equipment that gets added later, ends up undersized within a few years. And a generator installed without a clear answer for what happens in the seconds before it comes online is only half the plan. We look at both together: what needs to ride through instantly on battery power, what can tolerate the seconds it takes for the generator to start and the transfer switch to act, and what doesn't need standby coverage at all. Not every circuit in a building needs to be on either system, and putting everything on standby power that doesn't need it just adds cost and complexity without adding real protection.
